I think I might need help! Do they have support groups for plant freaks? I could possibly be out of control with my desire for the green stuff. I’ve always loved them but I do believe having a home with so many windows and so much light has definitely brought things to a level that might warrant a new show on A&E.
It’s been a almost a week since my last post and I needed to take a little break from my digital world.. because there’s lots going on and I can’t organize it in my head, so I decided to just live it, enjoy the ride… then blog about it later. It’s good to live in the now! But I also hate it when blogs I enjoy don’t give me all that eye candy I crave, so I needed to share something. Insert plant fetish HERE!
As one of my favorite bloggers, Kim at Kibster, can attest to… I have a true love for air plants. Maybe it’s that they only need air and a weekly bath to survive, or maybe it’s because they don’t require dirt to live so you can “plant” them anywhere. All I know is that they are BEAUTIFUL and amazing. I marvel at their sculptural shapes, spindly arms, and very Dr. Seuss-ish tendencies. They look as if they could just get up and walk out if you don’t watch over them. So I better take good care of them! I purchased some last summer [ CLICK HERE ] and decided to get bigger ones, this time.
After a good little 30 minute soak I began setting them around the house. My husband was laughing at me as I hopped from room to room putting them in bowls, vases, and candlesticks. WHERE TO PUT THEM? Honestly I had no plan.. I’ll just move them around and have fun!
Many places sell these but I ordered them online from airplantsupplyco.com because I’m a sucker for beautiful websites. (theirs is simple and lovely)
I love my danish candle holder from Kibster’s Etsy Shop. I have decided to collect a few more danish lovelies in different sizes and shapes. Kim’s shop has gorgeous vintage decor.
These little plants called Butzii are crazy cool. Their curly arms make me giggle.
I need to find a good home for this large Juncea. I think I’ll DIY an airplant cradle from wood and leather and hang it on the wall at some point. She’s so whispy and sweet!
I also replaced a couple of succulents and added a new one (oh big surprise.. more freegin’ plants) Honestly this one came only because I found this little pot for $2.00.
It was orange, which was one great thing (love orange) and it was Chevron. I hadn’t really jumped on that whole chevron trend.. but here’s my chance to “jump” in a small way.
Added a new aloe plant in the living room. And I promise this is it…
Actually there’s more but I’ll spare you the torture of any more plant activity. I can’t really imagine my home without them! They add so much life and color and interest to a room. I guess if you’re going to be obsessed about something there are much worse things. :-)
We’ve been really busy with projects and have some wonderful “finds” to report but like I said I’m living in the moment and enjoy all that is going on … more on all that later.
Now go out and buy some plants so I’m not the only FREAK around!!

You give me eye candy all the time!!! And then I have to use some of that sweet stuff in my own home. (love my little candle holder!) Honestly, I could play in the dirt all day… dirty fingernails are sexy around this house!! :-)

I used to share your freakdom, I lived in a house that had skylights and really tall ceilings. I then found out I was moving to another state and while packing realized I had a major plant problem. Among my plants was a 9′ Norfolk pine and an 8′ Ficus and those were just the biggest, I literally had them everywhere! My plant problem was decided for me as all but 2 of my plants died during the move therefore ending my obsession, but I’m liking the idea some air plants so I might be right there with you soon.
Oh man, I can totally relate. When my husband and I were apartment living we always had little balconies and I would fill them with plants. We had two ficus trees that got to be about 8 feet tall and I lugged those monster around for 4 moves! I think i just abused the hell out of them because I eventually lost them to frost, etc. ( and they were probably sick of moving – I just wore them out!) I currently have a pencil plant that was about 3 feet when we moved in to this house and is now approaching 9 feet. I have to say that she’s gorgeous and I’ll haul her anywhere! The air plants are such little sweeties! You could just throw those babies in a bag and head out the door. PACKED AND READY! HA HA!

I’ve always wanted an air plant but wasn’t sure how they survive with pretty much nothing. I wish I had your green thumb, because I’ve even once killed a bromeliad, which are supposed to be the easiest plants to keep ever. Maybe I’ll pick up an air plant this week and try my luck :)
HA HA! I’m sure YOU didn’t kill it. Sometimes plants just die. When I buy them I always expect to lose a few… sometime some of them are just wonky!
I’ve only had 1 air plant die on me and I think I just let it go too long without water. (oops!) You forget that they derive their moisture and nutrients from the air but since they’re not outside to get rain they do need to be soaked once a week. They’re super easy… I hope you try one, or two, or 10… and be a freak like me! HA! Let me know, Cam.

HA! HA! I wasn’t hiding (well, maybe in the plants). Actually I’m sure you can agree that it’s good to just be in your life instead of blogging about your “life”. I thoroughly enjoy doing this… the people are the BEST (like you) so I could never “hide” for too long. Thank you, Lindsey.

Hey Shirley! I really should have mentioned that you were definitely an inspiration for me this weekend in the plant department! Your succulent planter in that Russel Wright dish was so gorgeous I just looked around the house and HAD to replant, repot, and refresh things. It was so fun and my little delivery of air plants topped it off. Perfect timing. Yes, do try some. That Butzii is incredible. It boggles the mind to look at them… they’re like little aliens from another planet. (awesome!) uhmmmm, I’m with you… I draw the line at taxidermy. The only thing allowed in my house that’s dead is …. well, maybe a bug. IT BETTER BE DEAD, at least. HA HA!

You did very well my little plant freak! (lol) I debated on getting a bulbosa because it’s looks much thicker and more whimsical that the butzii… but I can ALWAYS go back! I know, I know… even the way they’re wrapped and packaged is pretty, isn’t it. Get this… yesterday, the actual owner of the business ended up on the blog and left a message. How nice is that! I guess she got some traffic to the site and had to see “what’s going on”. HA HA! I think she does a great job with the web, and the plant selection, and the quick delivery. I’m happy you’re happy. Until seeing your plants in their beautiful containers and settings, it never occurred to me that certain plants fit well with a particular period or style. Your little air plants look midcentury modern— sleek and simple, while ferns look fluffy and Victorian.
My plant fetish was ended by my cat . He jumped up on built-in shelves which were filled to the brim with pots of plants, and knocked them ALL off. I still have the cat, but I have fewer plants.
Hey Polly! Good to hear from you. You’re absolutely right… there are certain plants that probably wouldn’t look right with this type of architecture and period of home. I tend to buy what I like… but then realize that I keep buying the same type/shape plants. They’re all a bit simple, spiky, broad, or they’re succulents or cactus. Not much traditional stuff around here! And the air plants are so small that you can tuck them away in very unexpected places which provides a sweet surprise for the eye. I’m so in love with them.
OH NO! I’m imagining plants and dirt crashing all around you. AHHHHH! It’s hard to be mad at our babies, isn’t it. They’re curious and can’t help it. Sounds like when our cat jumped on my freshly polyurethaned door. You can’t kill ’em so you wipe up the “mess” (and the tears) and move on. Do you have more than one cat? I’m already a plant freak… but I could easily become a crazy cat lady too. HA HA HA!

Also really glad you have clued me into what those little plants are. I just checked out the website and will be ordering a few this weekend. Just as soon as I figure out which ones I HAVE to have because I really kinda want them all. Too cool and I’ve never even heard of them (although I did see a couple on Kim’s Etsy recently).
Love also that you too have a Bill Curry Jack! Those things are awesome and I think mine is one of my favorite things I own. Small,simple,and perfect!

You know, I love that Jack.. but I doubt it’s a Bill Curry. It’s not really the right size… but it’s really heavy. I’ve kept my eye out for one for years but never found any and they’re pretty pricey on ebay/etsy. I may eventually splurge but this one is fun for now. I’ve seen yours in pictures and love the color. Glad you have one… proof of your awesome taste! It is simple and perfect.

Man, if there was an app for that I’m afraid of what might happen! I don’t take credit for my green thumb… it just happens without me doing much. I think it’s the perfect amount of light in the house…. and personally I think my plants can sense that I’m a stressed out psycho lady and if they die I might go postal!!

We’re very proud to have it and we’re renovating it on our own. A couple of DIY’ers trying to do things on a shoe string budget. (that is if I don’t spend all my money on plants!) Thanks so much for this post! I love plants myself and since I was about nine years old I have had plants in my room. I have even had popcorn plants, peas, beans and broccoli on my windowsill growing just fine when I was 11, so I have had this love and interest in plants for a very long time. I personally love Jade Plants, Scented Geraniums and Arrowhead Vine.
OH NO, thank you for taking a look and making me feel like it’s perfectly normal to have 500 plants in your house! (HA! ok, I’m exaggerating!) It’s so fun to put something out there and get such lovely comments back… bloggers are the BEST! YOU really DO LOVE plants. Popcorn plants? That is too cool! Oh you had me at geraniums, though. Love them, always have. I didn’t get any this year but usually keep a nice pot of them on the porch. So pretty. Thank you again for commenting. You’re so nice.
I grew some really cool plants from a child on, in fact I am growing potatoes in a pot as a houseplant and last year in a margarine tub got baby potatoes to grow it was pretty cool. I did lose some Jade Plants that I left out too long around January. I had grew several of them from leaf cuttings for about three years so it was an issue for me. Fortunately I have more. Your very welcome by the way and keep on posting about plants.
Potato plants alway freak me out! Definitely in a good way! Stick your hand in the dirt and pull out a delicious potato. INCREDIBLE. I’m a simple shit, I guess… but I love it.
I’ll definitely throw in some plant posts when I can… It’s part of my daily life and love so it’s inevitable. THANK YOU, AGAIN!

Yes, Courtney…you should. I promise you’ll fall in love with them! And if you water them once a week with a good soaking bath.. you won’t kill them. And you don’t need dirt so there’s no mess. When I got this order in the mail the owner of the shop had a little note printed on the receipt about how they’re so much fun I might want to give them names. Wonderful! I have to say that I didn’t know much about them until a few years ago and once you buy a couple you do get hooked! Okay, so now I can blame my plant freakdom on the people who sell these. It’s all their fault! HA HA HA! No soil required and soak them once or twice a week depending on how dry your air is and they’re good to go. I hope you try them… let me know if you do! Then I saw them growing “wild” (or maybe they were planted, I have no idea – it’s just hard to picture such a beast sprouting up like a weed, but it must grow wild somewhere!). I think I prefer the butzii, it’s less scary, but I had to share the monster photo as I thought you would appreciate it!
OH WOW… I’m so happy you shared that monster with me! SO FREAKY AND COOL! Actually being the plant freak I am I believe that’s an agave plant. And truth be told I love them! I think I’m drawn to all those crazy leaves and plants that look like they could be from outer space or something. I’m not sure what it is… but they make me squeal!
Don’t get me started on the succulents… OMG, if I buy another one of those or make another damn terrarium my husband may move out! (I may have to sneak them in at night!) HA!

Good for you! If there’s a registry for house plant killers, I’d be a charter member. So I don’t succumb to buying them very often…it’s a slow and sure death for any houseplants I do drag home. Better for me to stick with the outdoor plants – they stand a fighting chance at least ;-)
OH NO, I may have to join two clubs then… because trust me, I’ve killed planty! (I mean plenty)
I am persistent, though, and I’ll continue to buy them trying different ones until I hit the jackpot and then stick with it… bragging at my green thumb when really the plants do all the work! But honestly I’m with you… the outside plants are my favorite and if I could spend my days working in the yard instead of behind a desk I’d do it in an INSTANT! No bitching about the sweat, the heat, the dirt… I’d be in heaven. :-)

AIR PLANTS! Yes, I’d forgotten about those. I was just talking about these with a friend a few days ago but couldn’t remember the name. Since moving to a new house with a yard and garden area I’ve become obsessed with gardening though I can’t say I’m good at it – I’m on my second batch of garden purchases :-/ Fingers crossed this time I can balance everything in my life and remember to water my plants. Very neat vases and the aloe plant is adorable.
New house – yard – garden…. I’m with you! I was always a plant freak but the new house, patios, atriums, courtyards, and all the window in this house just scream for plants. Growing up my parents always worked in the yard and planted flowers, etc… and they took great pride in their home. I’m sure those years of working with them had an impact on me and now I’m like you… it’s become an obsession. I bet your super good at it! Hey.. thanks for asking! You know I’m not sure about the plant in the orange pot by the glasses. They had a bunch of little succulents at the store but none were marked. In my opinion the answer would be YES, I do believe it’s some form of aloe vera or something very similar. Actually it’s cool that you ask because I’ve never seen one like it (and I’m always looking for plants… my insane habit is obvious!) So Yes, I believe you’re right.
Oh, the last picture is actually an iron Jack. They were made in the 1960’s by the designer Bill Curry. They were originally designed to function as bookends but many people just collect them for random decor. I do believe I have a replica, as there are no markings on it.. but who knows! I think it’s fun and cool. Thanks for asking about it… maybe you’ll find one!

I’m really strange when it comes to plants… meaning when i wake up and have my daily dose of caffeine I have to smell plants and see them. I’m also quite a keen gardener, so we have our entire courtyard an assortment of different tropical plants.
Unfortunately, here in England it tends to rain quite a lot so I do have to keep my pot plants inside. I’ve honestly turned the house into a tropical garden.
That’s wonderful that you enjoy it so much! It’s not for everyone… but obviously there’s more plant obsessed people than I realize!! (thank goodness!)

We have so many windows in our home that your eyes go straight to the yard… so I’ve tried hard to make sure the view is pretty. Plants are amazing, inside and outside your home. I love them. Thanks for sharing your love of them with me!

I had to landscape my entire yard. We tore everything out and started over. I’m proud to say I did it all myself and it was so much work. Nothing brings me more joy when it comes to working on our home. My husband is the veggie garden keeper and does amazing with it. Are you about to renovate your home? If I inspire anyone.. it’s amazing… and that is super cool. We’ve been working for 3 years this week so I’m feeling the joy and the exhaustion. Thank you… the photos are all camera… I take no credit for those. It’s actually just a digital point and shoot. It’s a canon powershot. It does have manual settings ( which I’m learning to use … and an awesome zoom. Somewhere on this blog I have pictures of the super moon. I got pretty great results. I love the camera! Did you buy plants or air plants? Either way… good for you! The succulent thing for me is overwhelming (and so freggin’ fun!). Every time I go to a nursery I see new ones that I don’t have and feel the need to take them home. Sometimes I buy them, make arrangements or terrariums and then find “Someone” to give them to. AM I CRAZY? (slightly!)

This house was a complete surprise for us. We had always planned to build something new and modern… but got this chance and took it! I think it’s almost more difficult. I’ve had two friends build their homes from the ground up in the time it’s taken us. AHHHHH… I’m so JEALOUS! But it’s all good…this house has a story and a history that a new one would never offer. I’m happy we did it. When the craziness dies down I will dig deeper into your blog. It looks really fun. Thanks… you’re so cool.

I have too many houseplants, mostly succulents. I can’t seem to stop myself from propagating pothos vines and Christmas cacti, either. I knew it was getting out of hand when my 4-year-old told me about filling some empty flower pots with dirt outside, but then he started to worry about what he had done. He started to worry that vines would grow in them!
HA HA! Great story. Kids! Sounds like he’s a doll. I have a few cacti and they are growing like crazy. I never do anything to them and I think that’s just fine with them. I’m happy to know I’m not the only one loving the plants! Thanks for sharing.. and for commenting.

I have heard also that plants respond to musical vibration–sitar raga and baroque music are favorites among the plant world.

My mother-in-law suggested I get some air plants for our new house the other day. I was kind of skeptical of the idea because I had never heard of air plants before. I think this is just the right kick in the butt! lol
Yes, DO IT! DO IT! You’ll be hooked, I guarantee it. They’ll make you smile every day. If you do order some, be sure and check out their size. Some of them are teeny tiny and I tend to like the ones that are bigger… more fun to look at. (just some advise). Have fun with it… and share pictures if you do!

Your airplanes are beautiful! And I completely understand about plants getting out of control. I have an herb garden that is rapidly expanding. We just moved to LA and our apartment neighbors must think I’m nuts because I’ve hauled 3 bags of soil into our little 2 bedroom.
HILAROUS! I can see it now… them looking puzzled “what the heck is she doing in there”!! Sounds familiar. I know my neighbors think I’m nuts… I’m constantly fretting over my plants, replanting, re-potting, moving plants in the landscape, watering, dead-heading flowers, trimming, mulching.. it’s constant. AND A JOY! Glad you understand that passion! I think LOTS of folks do. Thank you for sharing.. it made me smile!

The plants actually don’t like or want direct sun. Most of what I buy likes filtered light and even then only requires 3-4 hours of it. Maybe that’s why I have pretty good luck with them because the windows in the house really do all the work and I don’t have to think about it. The little air plants will burn up pretty quick if you let direct sun get to them… especially if you put them in a glass container. WOW, they’re just like me… I burn in an instant. HA HA!

Thanks for the inspiration, i hope to achieve all the above I’ve already set it in stone that this would be my summer project, grant it the yard has been unkempt for 20 years from the previous owner, but that makes all the more worth while to turn it around into hopefully a very neat little self-sufficient veggie garden.

I had a tillsandia that I MURDERED! Or forgot to water, take your pick. The husband always wants me to put them in other plants but I think that looks creepy and parasitic. I love the orange and white chevron pot and really all the others as well. :) Cheers – CT

I thought about putting them in other plants but I always felt it distracted from their simple beauty. It’s like they just need to shine on their own. In reality, though.. they attach themselves to trees, etc. in nature …so it probably makes sense to add them to something else.

I absolutely love the look of these plants! They’re so simple, but they’re so cute and unique. It adds a nice touch to a modern themed space.
Oh good! I’m glad they appeal to you (and so many). They are a special little surprise in the home. Not like the average house plant, for sure! Good point about the modern space… some plants just go better with that type of architecture and decor … so I think you hit the nail on the head ..perfect combo.

Nice air plants – I haven’t gotten one yet, but I feel like I’m sneaking up on it. Also like your aloe and the pencil cactus in your header. Our pencil cactus just went through some rough times – we trimmed it and it seems to be on the mend, with some new growths.

That’s great — “sneaking up on it”!! Funny. I hope you do try a few of them.. it’s not a big commitment so that makes them easy to own. And they seem to intrigue visitors so they’re great conversation starters!!
Man, our pencil plant is FREAKING ME OUT! It is now almost 9 feet tall. I promise, I’m not doing anything to it. I kick it some water every couple of weeks and just sit back in awe. Obviously she’s SUPER happy in the spot she’s in. When you say you trimmed it… I actually think that’s when ours went crazy. It suffered some damage from frost, so we trimmed, and it went nuts after that. Must be a good thing to do! Who knew?

Nine feet?! Wow! Okay your “water every couple of weeks” makes me think we are watering it too often (every week) which makes sense, seeing as how it’s a cactus and all…thanks for the advice.

Also, I always thought one of the joys of contemporary architecture was that it didn’t compete with the objects or people present. Certainly your latest photos demonstrate that.
I am a little envious, though, when it comes to bringing plants indoors in growing season (in contrast to winter) — we just can’t seem to cut any of the blossoms from the yard, no matter how great they look inside once we do.
HA HA! Good point! I can tell you that I am a webmaster for a local GCA club where I live and those ladies are AWESOME! I don’t think my thumb is green enough for them. :-) I can update their website with pretty pictures but those ladies are incredible!! I have definitely learned a thing or two from them.
I’m with you on cutting the blossoms. I almost prefer to look out and see all the color in my yard… right where I need it to be. It’s a beautiful sight and nothing beats being greeted by gorgeous color as you drive up to your home or sit on the back porch. I’m hooked! ( and my neighbors LOVE IT! )

We’ve got so many fresh tomatoes right now we’re giving them away by the bowl fulls! It’s the most wonderful thing ever… when you grow your own food.
My love of plants definitely goes beyond what looks pretty inside, as I’ve worked my rear off landscaping our yard and we have a wonderful tomato garden.

It was fun to share and have so many people respond. I tend to feel like so much of my time is spent inside, in an office, behind a computer that I crave the outside and all that mother nature gives us. Corny? Maybe so… but I do feel wonderful when I scatter a little green around. I guess I’m getting what I need.

I know what you mean. My mother can never say no to any new plants. She’s somehow adopted all of her plant collection (about 15 so far) from outside sources.

Forget the plants….I am in love with your minimalist decor….but I guess that is why the plants look so good in the shots too. I love plants but have a very bad habit of not watering them. I do much better with faux plants…hahahaha

I love Air Plants!! They are so awesome! My friend just got one and I am definitely a bit jealous :) I just have a collection of succulents. As a botany major, I am surprisingly horrible at taking care of plants, but they are luckily easy to take care of and definitely super interesting to look at!
Hey succulents are high on my list! They never let me down and they’re super easy to take care of. I have them all over my house. The air plants are great to me because since there’s no dirt you can put them in places that no other plant could go… which makes them great for decorating. And they’re super cool to look at. thanks for the comment!
