Oh… get your mind out of the gutter. It’s not that kind of post. HA!
The weekends come and go so quickly that I’m not sure I even had one last week. We didn’t make a lot of progress on the Master Bedroom because there were so many other things that needed to be done.
You know things have gone too far when you star seeing cobwebs on the artwork like we’re living in some haunted house, there’s “pink slime” in the toilet that even the FDA wouldn’t approve of and you go to get the cat off the couch and you realize that it’s not the cat at all… but a giant hairball that could come to life if lightning struck the house (It’s ALIVE!). Yep, all sure signs that I need to get off the ladder and make friends with Mr. Clean and my swiffer duster. (If only Mr. Clean could flex those muscles and use that duster for me! That’s what I’d call a man-“maid” dream.) Wishful thinking.
So unfortunately cleaning came first which took FOREVER but that’s not to say we didn’t accomplish a few tedious “Oh God, when will it end” projects.
This house is challenging. With no attic the ceiling is the roof …with only layers of insulation, tar, and a granulated cap between me and the elements. It’s fine, it works, the sound of rain on the roof is cool – but there’s no place to run electricity for ceiling fixtures so each fixture in the rooms has to be wired down the supporting roof beams and this is what you’re left with.
No, we’re not obsessed with coffee, okay maybe a little, it’s my husband’s high-tech way of cutting the beams that will cap all that exposed electrical wire. He has to fit them around the ceiling fan on each side. Yes, we’re such professionals…it’s how we roll. Cream, no sugar.
I think he was feeling lazy and thought the curve was about the same size as the coffee container. Turns out it WAS!
Once the beams get capped on each side I have to putty and paint the 5,000 holes he always puts in them. God love the man, but he goes crazy with the nail gun. So I putty, sand, and paint. It’s my life. That little strip of wood makes the whole room look more like a room than a construction zone. As small as this task was, it made me happy.
I also finished painting the “fake wall” behind the built in cabinetry. When we tore out the paneling in the house and hung sheetrock we wanted to keep this built-in cabinet for storage so in order to pull out the paneling behind it we would have had to tear out the cabinet. OH HELL NO! That wasn’t about to happen so I worked a little magic and taped, floated and textured the paneling to look like the rest of the sheetrock walls. Nobody will know and it saved me SOOOO much trouble.
Here’s the before of the paneling.
Here’s the after. So much brighter and cleaner. Those windows are much improved too! Texturing paneling is super easy but be sure to use an oil based primer over it to seal it all so there’s no bleed through.
So now we are at a point where there’s only two major things left to do in this room. We have to refinish the built-in cabinetry. After finishing our kitchen cabinets I feel confident that I can do this with no problem. They’ll look so much better. And I have to patch, seal and wax the concrete floors.
Here’s a picture of the room so you can see the entire cabinet and floors. We’re not living in this space so it’s a mess and a dumping ground for things. I’m thinking about leaving the Prilosec Paper Curtains. (my friend’s dad works for pharm. company and shares those paper rolls that you put your naked butt on when you go to the doctor. I use them for painting.) My acid reflux has improved since I hung them. HA HA!
I thought I’d throw this pretty baby in for fun. Here’s a picture of the room after we got the house and ripped out the carpet. You can see that we removed a small portion of the built-ins and then tore out that entire closet on the right. It was eating up the room and all that wall space. Removing it made the room feel twice the size. (that’s carpet adhesive on the floor – YUCK!) We’re slow… but we’ve come a long way. If I ever get to move into this damn room I may never leave. OH GOOD GRIEF… I just hope it does’t SUCK when I’m finished. How embarrassing.
Thanks for letting me catch up and blah blah blah you to death about this never-ending project. Now I’ll just make it through the next couple of days so the weekend can once again pass me by. :-)
Love the naked but paper usage.. very technical. Looking good so far… really love the beam…great job ‘hiding’ the wiring to the fan.
Hey…we keep it classy and professional over here! Our friends are hilarious…. they bring me Prilosec paper for painting, dickie work pants, gardening/work gloves, and hats. They’ll just show up with stuff they know I’ll use. God bless ’em… I think they feel sorry for me. H AHA HA!
Haha, well it’s great ot have helpful friends like that.
Oooh this is going to be great! My husband would go crazy for a space like this. You go girl!
Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you. I have a feeling I’m going to get lots of inspiration from you. Thank you so much. Your blog is beautiful.
Stacey
HOW do you guys accomplish all that— and have regular jobs, and go grocery shopping , do all these beautifully written and constructed blog posts, sleep, go to estate sales……. etc. ??
I do know what you mean when you say completing a project which looks very nice or improves the function of something,
makes you feel happy. I have done a few watercolor paintings which make me feel that way.
We are credenza shopping this week. Have you been to Re|Mod in Baytown? We may drive over to check out a Paul McCobb credenza , which is the exact size size and color we need.
need,
Good luck with your next part of the project!
Oh Polly…. you never mentioned you were an artist. You little secet keeper. YOU MUST share something with me. I’m so taken with people’s abilities to paint. I wish so badly that I could and I’m like a kid in a candy store looking at art. Good for you. I’m super impressed. I would think painting would definitely put you in a good place. ( even painting walls can do that for me!)
Richie is a BIG fan of Paul McCobb. I like his stuff too… but Richie is always hunting on Ebay and watches marked pieces. The credenzas are beautiful and I hope you are able to score one of those! His dressers are to have and to hold. If I could find one of those for either my bedroom or the guest room I’d be one happy camper!
Didn’t know about RelMod. Baytown? Really. That surprises me. Please let me know what you think of it and what their prices are like. I swear if I went to a shop in Baytown it would be like a Caribbean vacation getting out of this house. (Exaggerating!) Seriously, let me know.
