Hello, hello, is anybody home? I’m sure that’s how most people feel when the come to our house. It’s like Fort Knox thanks to all the fences and courtyards that surround our house of glass. Sometimes I love it and sometimes it worries me that people might need to “get to us” but can’t. When the gates are open it’s still a mystery to some because this house is so unique and special they can’t figure out that this….. is the door bell.
It’s a small piece of wood (carved by my husband) and attached to a string that runs through little eye screws up the door frame, under the eave of the roof and through a tiny grove in the ceiling into my dining room. It’s not your average door bell. It’s special.. and fun.. and we love it! For some reason it makes everyone ooooo and ahhhh, and smile like small children when they figure it out.
You can see the actual “bell” from the front door. That’s the dining room on the other side of the red wall. The cowbells hang from the string and when you pull on the outside it shakes the bell and we know we have visitors. SO FUN!
Here it is as it hangs in the dining room.
This hand made “door bell” is really three cowbells and a fishing weight, a small wood cylinder and some rope that attaches through holes through the top of a metal cap of some sort. Obviously something that has been re-purposed. (My kind of thing!)
It was here when we bought the house and no doubt put together by the Goode’s. We cleaned it up, ran new string, and put the new pull on it.
Let me tell you… that sucker is LOUD when it gets pulled. I love hearing those bells. VISITORS!
Just a fun little tidbit to share because honestly I don’t think many people even know it’s there. Once they do they’re fascinated. It’s just one of the many little surprises that make this place like no other.
There’s a small jingle bell attached to the string on the outside so the user knows what’s happening. Really how could you not!! (ha ha!)
Here’s a quick video of it in action.

Does your house have something unexpected and fun? I hope so. :-) Tell me about it.
I don’t remember this doorbell. Of course, when I was younger, we were supposed to come on in, and sit quietly while we waited for our piano lessons while Ruth Goode finished up her lesson with the previous student. Thanks so much for sharing. And love the video and explanation about the doorbell! Next time I visit, I’ll ring the bell for sure :-)
HA HA HA! I can just hear your parents telling you to “sit quietly”. That’s so great! I love that you shared that. As far as the door bell goes…. MANY people don’t know it’s there… and that just kills me because it’s one of my most favorite and fun features. Especially knowing that their creative little minds came up with the idea. I makes me happy. And yes, when we get more of this house done I definitely want you to come back and ring the doorbell. :-) Stacey
