Door Makeover

posted on
Once again a weekend comes and goes and I didn’t accomplish everything I wanted… but not because I didn’t try.
I’m trying to finish the guest bedroom and still need to paint the old hollow core door so I got to work on that.  I just refuse to throw something in the land fill if I think I can fix it or make it look better.
The really sad thing is I took a “before” picture and the old door had a stamp on the end of it that said “October 30, 1957”. Wow, I just thought that was the coolest thing ever!  The sad and bad news is that I can’t find the pictures anywhere. I fear that I accidentally deleted them from my camera. Anyway, stressing out over those lost photos won’t help me now.  The hollow core door had a large mirror on the back of it that I removed but there were several holes in the door that had to be patched and sanded (pictures gone! :-( ) After some minor repairs I primed and paint the door white and decided to add some more ORANGE to the guest bedroom by painting some stripes down the door. I measure out the stripes and used delicate blue tape.

The secret is to always go along the tape line with your base color so if any bleeding occurs it’s the same base color and it seals the edge. I then applied  “butterscotch” paint.

I needed to clean up the old hinges that are really nice but full of grime and old finish from the door. I’ve learned by now that harsh chemicals are not always the answer. Believe it or not but a good hot boil on the stove does the trick just fine. So I boiled the hinges for about 15 minutes and the “gunk” just came right off. They look nice for 1957 hinges. ( I have to assume the hinges are as old as the door, right.)

Everything dried and the tape came off really well and it turned out fine but when I went to hang the door back up it just doesn’t fit quite right and rubs when you try to shut the door. It was all cockeyed.  Old house, old door,… adjustments have to be made. So the project was halted, as I’m going to have to remove the door stops on the outside of the door, install the door knob, line the door back up and re-install the stops. No big deal, really… except I wanted to put my door knob on and call it “DONE”. HA HA! Not this weekend. But hopefully by next.
